If a full day of beach-going and bike-riding has exhilarated rather than exhausted you and you want to extend the day’s activities late into the evening, several restaurants and bars in and around the Eastham area are open late.
A friendly vibe, creative menu and excellent food make Local Break one of our favorites. It’s among the small number of Eastham-area establishments that’s not only open year-round but also into the wee hours. On a hot summer night there’s nothing better than Thom’s Cucumber Collins, made from house-infused cucumber gin, ginger ale, a splash of sour and fresh cucumbers. Live music peformed by local musicians is featured some nights. Check out our review for more info about why we love Local Break, and check their Facebook page for listings of dinner specials and the entertainment schedule.
Stewart’s Seafood Restaurant & Tavern serves food until 10 p.m. (try the cod piccata), but their attractive bar area is open later during the summer season. The live jazz trio that appears on Saturdays and Sundays in-season adds to the festive atmosphere. They are excellent musicians. Stewart’s is one of the few places in the area that has casual outdoor seating–mostly picnic tables and a few lounge chairs–and that welcomes dogs outside.
Eastham’s locals love to congregate at Parker’s Shipwreck Tavern off-season, but you’re unlikely to see them there in July and August, when the place fills with tourists. I don’t understand the appeal of Parker’s, but maybe I’m missing something. It’s dumpy and dingy, a dive bar at its core, but the waitresses are friendly and service is efficient. We go there only when our favorite Cape Cod band, the Grab Brothers, is scheduled to play. Parker’s Shipwreck Tavern doesn’t have a web site but they do have a Facebook page.
Open only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the Beachcomber on Cahoon Hollow beach in Wellfleet is a gathering spot for beach bums of all ages. It’s the only oceanfront restaurant and bar on the Cape. Other noteworthy distinctions: It was named the “Best Bar on Cape Cod” in Boston magazine’s 2014 “Best of Boston” competition, the “10th Sexiest Beach Bar in the World” by the Travel Channel, and one of the “Best Bars in America” by Esquire magazine. While the food isn’t distinctive, the ocean-facing raw bar is a nice spot, and live music fills the place on summer evenings.
Pearl Restaurant & Bar on Commercial Street in Wellfleet has a view of Wellfleet Harbor on one side, a salt marsh on the other, and one of the largest bars on the Outer Cape. The scene is lively every night during the summer. If you need a break from the beach, come here on a summer afternoon when the menu features some great specials and live bands are scheduled to perform. Pearl is open seasonally.
If you’re a fan of rock music and feel like dancing, head to Land Ho in nearby Orleans or Harwich Port any night when the Grab Brothers Band is playing. The set lasts until 1 a.m. in Orleans but earlier in Harwich Port because of noise abatement issues. Skip the food but stay for the fantastic music and a really good time. Both locations are open year-round.
