When you’re vacationing on Cape Cod, sometimes you may want a break from seafood. I mean, how many consecutive days can your wallet handle lobster? When we have a hankering for pizza we head to Route 6 and land at The Red Barn on the east side of the road or The Fairway Restaurant and Pizzeria on the west side. Good-quality basic pies as well as dozens of creative combinations are available at both locations.
The pizza menu is lengthy but our long-standing Red Barn favorite is Pizza Rustica, which is piled with tomato sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, fresh spinach, frizzled prosciutto and crumbled sausage. Yum. Pies are available in 10″, 14″ and 18″ sizes. The Red Barn menu also includes salads, burgers, sandwiches, ice cream, and a small selection of desserts, beer and wine. You can choose between indoor and outdoor seating. An enormous flat-screen TV sits on one wall in the indoor eating area.
Before or after your meal enjoy a round of mini-golf with the kids or an expedition through the Red Barn Gift Shop, all conveniently clustered on the same property. This place is very family-friendly and can be a sanity-saver on a rainy day. It’s one of the few eateries in Eastham that’s open all year.
The ambience and appearance at the Fairway are more upscale than at the Red Barn, but families still are welcome. The restaurant is open for breakfast and for dinner beginning at 5 p.m. In addition to a full menu of pasta, chicken and fish dishes, calzones and sandwiches, you can order a 12″ or 16″ pizza topped with any combination selected from a list of 30 items. These include the usual meat and vegetable choices as well as scallops and chopped clams for dyed-in-the-wool Cape Cod seafood lovers. Their dough is homemade and quite delicious. Table service is friendly and professional. Not surprisingly, the place typically is packed at both breakfast and dinner during the summer, so we usually call ahead and order our pizza to go. If the Red Sox are playing, try to score a table in the cozy bar area, which has a TV, and get into the spirit of rooting for the hometown team!
We’re glad that The Fairway is open all year, and we love the fact that they give back to the community by supporting the Boy Scouts, local Little League, schools and a host of other worthy causes.
Don’t miss their super-popular, line-out-the-door, drool-inducing shop next door called Hole-in-One (for more info see our post, “Donuts in Eastham: Objects of Obsession“).
